If you know me then you know how I feel about having good skin. I get compliments all the time about how good and clear my skin is when I boldly decide to go out without any makeup on. I tell people all the time that “good makeup starts with good skin.” I cannot stress that statement enough. So when I ask a client what is their skincare regime and they tell me, “soap and water,” I can’t help but to bite my tongue and bald my face up. What do you mean, “soap and water?” As your favorite makeup artist and good friend, I am here to tell you that “soap and water” is just not going to cut it. Your skin is in dire need of so much more. It is important to understand that you need to cleanse your skin at least twice a day. OMG! Twice a day!? Yes, twice a day, for three minutes, morning and night. Washing your face is more important than you think and you need at least a cleanser, a toner, and a moisturizer. Here’s why…
1. Everyday our skin ages. Consider the excess sebum (oil), dead skin cells, and pollution that sits on your face. It is important to cleanse away these impurities along with any excess makeup that is left over after the makeup remover cloth. Forgoing not cleansing your skin can lead to larger pores and will allow oil to settle in and clog them. Washing your face at night will allow the skin to get the oxygen that it needs to repair itself. Just like our bodies, our skin can tell the difference between day and night. Nocturnal blood flow in the skin is higher. Thus, if you don’t wash your face before bed, it’s a missed opportunity to do something great for your skin and to wake up with smoother, clearer and younger looking skin.
OK, you may be asking why do I have to wash my skin in the morning if I already washed it the night before? Well, since the skin has had time to repair, washing your face in the morning will wash away dead skin cells and excess sebum that water cannot do alone. Having a cleanser will emulsify these impurities. Choose a cleanser that matches your skin. If you have dry skin, avoid a cleanser with high alcohol content. If you have oily skin, choose a cleanser with a lower PH level and if you have skin that is sensitive, choose a cleanser free of fragrance and additives.

Tip: Rinse your face several times with lukewarm water to wash any excess dirt and cleanser off. For the final wash, splash your face with cool water to tighten the pores back up. Pat your face dry, never scrub.
2. The second most important step in your skincare regime is having a good toner. Somehow, so many people seem to skip this step. Most people skip this step because they do not understand what toning does for the skin. Having a good cleanser and toner is essential to maintaining healthy skin. Toning should be considered an important part of the cleansing process. A good toner will remove any remaining bits of oil, dirt and debris left behind by the cleanser. More importantly, a toner will help soothe, nourish and hydrate the skin while restoring its delicate pH balance. The skin has a pH balance of 5.5, while water can have a pH balance as high as 9.5 depending on where you live and on how hard the water is. After cleansing your face, your PH is distorted. Just like cleansing, toning should be done twice a day as well. Toning the skin will also allow you to prep it for any serums or moisturizers that is next in your routine. Cleansing and toning are one of the least expensive, yet most effective ways of maintaining healthy, vibrant skin.

3. The final stage in the cleansing process is moisturizer. Your skin needs to be replenished each night after a day of exposure to the environment and wearing make-up. Your choice of moisturizers should include natural ingredients with proven benefits such as shea butter, cocoa butter, aloe vera, jojoba, rosehip, ginseng, seaweed, and of course, pure essential oils. Take time to moisturize your lips as well since the skin on your lips in the thinnest layer than any other part of the face. Do not forget to hydrate the eye zone as well and use a light product for this area. Keep in mind to use a moisturizer that suites your skin type as well.
Three minutes, twice a day, is all the time you will need to properly cleanse your skin. Trust me, your skin will thank you.
